Letter of Expectations
In 2006 numerous grievances were filed based on the company issuing letters of expectation. The letters were issued for various reasons and were placed on our members files for a period of one or two years.
In each of the cases arbitrator Teplitsky ordered "A letter of expectation is not disciplinary and does not form any part of the disciplinary record of a grievor"
In order to further clarify, Arbitrator Teplitsky maintained that those letters will not be used to disadvantage one from applying for an LOU position.
While it is permissible for an employer to provide a general written statement of its expectation to an employee, an employer may not disguise discipline in the form of a letter of expectation.
There is a distinct difference between letters of discipline and letters of expectation.
Beware of the letters of discipline disguised as a letter of expectation!!!!
